When creating a niche website, doing the proper keyword research is one of the most important factors that can determine how successful you will be. Choose the wrong keyword and you will never make it onto the first page of search rankings. However if you do the proper research and pick the pick the right keyword you can rank highly even if you don’t have a lot of content or back links. I will go over the exact method I use when doing keyword research for Niche websites.
I use Market Samurai for keyword research so for this tutorial Download a free trial so you can follow along.
1. Create a new project
Open up Market Samurai and create a new project. Just enter “niche website” as the keyword for now as we will be doing the keyword research shortly.
2. Choose a keyword
Next we need to choose a keyword to research, it can be helpful to brainstorm as many keyword ideas as possible and make list. Look around your home, look on the internet, talk to your friends and family to get as many ideas as possible. Try to target keywords that have a product or service associated with it and something that isn’t too technical (tech saavy people are less likely to click on ads and also this is a highly competitive niche). For this tutorial I will use the keyword “Home Garden” as an example.
Click on the “New Keyword” tab and enter your keyword then click “update”
3. Keyword Research
Now click on the “Keyword Research” Tab, change the phrase length to between 2-4 words. Remember we are targeting a niche, so our keyword may be several words long “vegetable garden fencing” or similar.
Click “Generate Keywords” and Market Samurai will use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to generate results. (You will need to enter your Google account details into Market Samurai)
4. Keyword Analysis
A list of keywords will be generated, now click on “Keyword Analysis”
Adjust the filters to the following settings:

5. Find Domains
Now select the checkbox next to all the keywords you are interested in and select “Find Domains”
I tend to look for exact match domain names if possible so delete the prefixes and suffixes from the domain variations, leave the Domain TLD’s as com, net, org and have no domain filters. Click “Find Domains”
6. Results
As you can see we got three results from a very big list of keywords which is very typical. The truth the majority of domain names you search for will already be taken. Do not fear because Google are placing less emphasis on exact match domain names so if you are eager to target a specific keyword then go with a suffix or prefix on the domain name.
7. Conclusion
Repeat this process for different keywords to come up with a master list of possible domain names to choose from. I will be writing a tutorial next week about the factors you should consider when deciding what domain names you want to turn into a website.
