Could the Nokia Lumia 900 be in the UK by June?

Featured

When the Nokia Lumia 900 was released at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year it was billed as a US exclusive. A little strange, some may have thought, since Nokia traditionally does well in the UK market; not Apple or Android well, but its last device (the Lumia 800) broke the Finnish manufacturers UK sales records. Instead of being disappointed, however, UK consumers may have been offered a little hope by none other than Carphone Warehouse.

The Lumia 900 is being pitched as a top tier device for Nokia. It is powered by a 1.4 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. It boasts a 4.3 inch AMOLED display with 800 x 480 resolution and ClearBlack technology. Running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, like its predecessor the Lumia 800 it is an upgrade with the same fresh design, polycarbonate casing and the option of buying the device in matte black or cyan blue. One major improvement is a 1Megapixel front-facing camera and new HD 720p capable video recording on the back. How well it will compete with dual-core phones that can burn through 512MB of RAM simply by coughing remains to be seen but it deserves to hold its own at the top end of the market, even if it fails to reach the actual summit.

Until this week, it looked as though this would only be in the hands of UK consumers. Yet a slip by Carphone Warehouse suggests that despite the device having 4G capability, and that technology seemingly out of reach for the UK mobile market for the foreseeable future, it was assumed it would not reach these shores, instead it could be here by the summer. A landing page appeared on the firm’s website suggesting an expected date of June 2012. The page was removed but not before the media got wind of it. It could be an error, or it could be a sign to get excited.

It doesn’t suggest 4G is heading to the UK any sooner; the mobile carriers need to agree to an Ofcom auction for bandwidth before that happens and with the legal wrangling that have pre-dated it, most analysts are not expecting any movement until at least early 2013. It is a positive step though. 4G will eventually arrive and it is good that Nokia could be priming themselves to be one of the first out the trap to release a 4G enabled device in the UK. Nokia’s share of the smartphone market has decreased as the Finnish manufacturer has lost ground to Apple and Android.

It announced in January that over a million Nokia Lumia handsets were shipped but there was no indication that this was good, or bad news. What was definitely bad was that sales were down and losses were up. Nokia needs a success to show its Windows Phone partnership is a good one and it needs to gain ground. Nokia also let it slip recently that there will be a white Lumia 900 on release too. The device launched well at CES and won nine awards before the trade fair finished. Its younger brother, the Lumia 710 which comes in with a lower specification, is due to go on sale in the next few weeks.

Experiencing QR Codes: Using Social Media in Real Life to Market Your Music

Featured

I was walking down the street to catch the bus to work when I noticed a music flyer pinned to a telephone pole. I’ve been in a band for many years and appreciate a good advertisement strategy, just in case I can use it for future performance flyers for us. As I walked closer, I noticed a strange black and white square situated prominently on the bottom left corner; I figured it was just the band’s symbol or an interesting decoration. But, as I focused on the square, it had a checkerboard design to it. I realized I had seen this shape before on magazine pages and T-shirts. It was a QR code.

What a unique idea, I thought. QR codes, or quick response codes, are meant to be scanned with today’s smartphones that have a camera, like an Iphone or Android. I pulled out my smartphone gadget and downloaded a QR scanner application right there off of my mobile broadband. One fast click of my camera and this band’s song began playing through the phone’s speakers with a duplicate flyer blazing from my touch screen. Maybe I should go check out this band’s performance.

A few weeks later, my band scheduled a new performance. Naturally, I was in charge of the flyers. I was very impressed with the flyer I saw previously and created my own QR code. We had a song that we were truly excited about and had the QR code encoded to play it; the code also pulled up a copy of the flyer with the address and website of the performance venue. Our band was sure to be a hit since fans could save the information from the QR code in their phones and reference it later. We could possibly end up selling more music at the performance as a result of the extra band exposure. I’ve noticed that many fans feel more of a personal connection with a band when they feel involved with exclusive content, just like our unreleased song that erupts out of the phone after scanning the code.

Before I created my own QR code, I had to find a website that would formulate the music and flyer data. Luckily, there are a number of different companies that will take your information and convert it into that simple checkerboard square that works on mobile broadband. Some businesses even do it for free; it just depends on the quantity of content that the square needs to hold. Kaywa was successful at creating my square.

At the performance, I was pleased to see that a lot of new fans showed up out of curiosity. As a walked around the crowd after the performance, I mingled with a few new faces. I asked them where they had heard about us since I was wondering how effective the flyer and QR code turned out. As it turns out, most of the new people were wanting to try out their new scanning code applications and were looking for random codes. Our band’s flyers were everywhere; the code let people listen to our new song and where to find us. Just what I was looking for.

After the performance, I researched QR codes a bit further. It turns out that they can also hold a website link in the form of a URL shortener, like bit.ly. My band and I have been trying to finish our website. As soon as we add all the finishing touches, I am going to create another QR code for our website. Between our flyer and music code matched with the website QR code, the band is going to soar into the big time.

Technology Doing Good: iPad Used in Speech Pathology

Featured

Tablets like the iPad have made our lives easier by bringing our email, work, and communication on the go. However, can this tool be used to help people with speech problems, too? Many speech pathologists believe so.

Third party companies are developing iPad applications especially tailored for children with special needs. Among these is the application Prologuo2Go, an augmentative communication device for children who can’t adequately express themselves.

With applications like Prologuo2Go, children that need to develop their verbal skills can now point to pictures of what they wish to communicate to others. Games are developed on the iPad that make speech therapy and communication fun, colorful, and engaging. Even silly games like making a virtual cake on the iPad can teach children the steps of how to make something.

The iPad not only helps with speech development, but also aids patients with general developmental delays, delayed motor skills, autism, and even cerebral palsy. The iPad can also help those with trouble focusing in a classroom setting, giving them a tool through which they can complete tasks independently, at their own pace.

Additionally, the iPad allows many schools and medical centers to save money, as its $500 price tag is significantly lower than prices for many speech pathology and therapy technology. Its portability and capacity are added bonuses.
